Indian nationals exploited in Russia-Ukraine conflict: CBI uncovers trafficking network, MEA urges swift action

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) made a significant breakthrough on Thursday, uncovering a vast human trafficking network operating nationwide, with the disturbing practice of exploiting Indian nationals under the guise of lucrative overseas employment opportunities, only to deploy them to the conflict zone between Russia and Ukraine.

The agency launched simultaneous searches at approximately 13 locations across Delhi, Trivandrum, Mumbai, Ambala, Chandigarh, Madurai, and Chennai in connection with the case.

According to the CBI, the traffickers functioned as a well-organised network, enticing Indian nationals primarily through social media platforms such as YouTube and local contacts or agents, promising high-paying jobs in Russia.

However, upon recruitment, these individuals were coerced into undergoing combat training and deployed to front lines in the Russia-Ukraine conflict zone against their will, endangering their lives. Shockingly, some victims sustained serious injuries in the war zone.

Several suspects have been detained for interrogation at various locations. Thus far, the investigation has confirmed approximately 35 cases of individuals being trafficked abroad, with efforts ongoing to identify additional victims. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities urging the public to remain vigilant and avoid falling prey to false promises of employment made by unscrupulous recruitment agencies and agents.

The grim reality of this human trafficking scheme was tragically underscored by the revelation of a 30-year-old man from Hyderabad, who reportedly lost his life in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine after being ensnared in the same job scam.

MEA has its say

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) revealed on Friday that several Indian nationals have been ensnared into working with the Russian Army under false pretences, prompting a strong response from the Indian government. The MEA said it is committed to resolve the issue swiftly, urging the Russian government for the early discharge of these individuals.

Addressing the matter, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, "Several Indian Nationals have been duped to work with the Russian Army. We have strongly taken up the matter with the Russian government for early discharge of such Indian nationals. Strong action has been initiated against agents and unscrupulous elements who recruited them on false pretexts and promises."

Jaiswal highlighted the recent actions taken by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which dismantled a major human trafficking network through searches conducted across various cities, leading to the gathering of incriminating evidence. He confirmed that multiple agents involved in the illicit recruitment are now facing charges of human trafficking.

Expressing concern for the welfare of the affected individuals, Jaiswal appealed to Indian nationals to be cautious and not fall prey to offers made by agents promising support jobs with the Russian Army. He underscored the inherent risks and dangers associated with such arrangements, highlighting the government's commitment to secure the early release and return of these nationals to India.

Jaiswal disclosed that approximately 20 individuals have reached out to the MEA seeking assistance, and efforts are underway to locate and aid them. The MEA is maintaining continuous communication with Russian authorities, urging for the prompt release and discharge of the duped Indian nationals.
