The Court of First Instance of Qatar, on October 26, 2023, sentenced 8 ex-servicemen of the Indian Navy to death on charges that remain classified.
In a statement released the same day The Ministry of External Affairs said that it was “deeply shocked” and was awaiting the detailed judgement. The Ministry’s statement read that they were “exploring all legal options” and would “continue to extend all consular and legal assistance”. They would also be taking up the verdict with the Qatari authorities.

<ins>August 30, 2022</ins> – 8 ex-servicemen of the Indian Navy were taken into custody by Qatari intelligence service, and were kept in solitary confinement. The 8 individuals were employees of the now defunct private firm Dahra Global Technologies and Consulting Services, a Qatari-based defence services provider.
<ins>September, 2022</ins> – The Indian Embassy was notified of their arrest. Their first bail plea was rejected.&nbsp;
<ins>September 30, 2022</ins> – The detainees were allowed a brief phone call with their family.

<ins>Who Are The 8 Ex-Servicemen</ins>
According to former military officials, all of the former Navy officers had “unblemished stints”, and had held important positions. The eight former navy personnel detained are Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta and Sailor Ragesh. Commander Purnendu Tiwari was even conferred the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman award in 2019
<ins>The (Concealed) Charges</ins>
Both Qatar and India have not made the charges against the Indian nationals public.
As per reports, however, the eight men were allegedly spying on Qatar’s secret submarine program on behalf of Israel.
Qatar’s state intelligence agency, the Qatar State Security, had allegedly intercepted electronic communication which implicated the men in committing espionage for Israel. They were accused of spying on the Qatari Navy’s classified project involving Italian-made midget submarines designed to evade radar detection.
“We have tried hard to convince our counterparts in Doha that India and its nationals were not involved in hostile intelligence operations against the emirate”, said an intelligence officer who spoke to The Print under the condition of anonymity in April, 2023. “But the Qataris are insisting that intelligence on their submarine programme was passed on to Israel,” he added.
<ins>Future Course of Action</ins>
On November 16, 2023, MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi expressed optimism saying that a “positive outcome” was expected of the appeal filed in Qatar’s Court of Appeal.&nbsp;
“I would again urge everyone not to engage in speculation considering the sensitive nature of the case, as well as the fact that the judgement in the entire process has been made confidential by the Qatari side,” stated Bagchi.
If Qatar’s Court of Appeal does not provide relief to the ex-servicemen, a further appeal can still be filed before the Court of Cassation, Qatar’s highest court.
Additionally, the Indian side is believed to be exploring other options to resolve this issue. One could be devising an arrangement under an existing agreement signed between India and Qatar in 2015 for the transfer of convicted prisoners which would allow them to complete their sentence in their home country.
Another avenue could be approaching the International Court of Justice.
The families of the eight men have already filed a mercy petition before the Emir of Qatar, who usually grants pardons during the Eid festivals and on Qatar’s National Day observed on December 18th.

The eight former Indian Navy personnel were sentenced to death by Qatar’s Court of First Instance on October 26. India expressed deep shock at the ruling and vowed to explore all legal avenues in the case.
Bagchi emphasised that the judgment is confidential, shared only with the legal team, and an appeal has now been filed. The appeal was submitted by the legal representatives of the detained Indian nationals.
Bagchi informed that the Indian embassy in Doha facilitated another consular access to the detainees on November 7. He reiterated that New Delhi remains in contact with the family members and highlighted that External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had met them earlier this month in New Delhi. Bagchi urged against engaging in speculation given the sensitive nature of the case.
The Indian nationals, who were employed by the private company Al Dahra, were arrested in August last year in an alleged case of espionage. The specific charges against them have not been made public by either the Qatari authorities or the Indian government.
The former Navy officers, with unblemished service records of up to 20 years, held significant positions, including instructors in the Indian Navy.
Al-Dhara Global, the company in question, ceased operations in Doha in May, leading to the return of its primarily Indian workforce to their home country. The Indian Navy had previously advocated for the release of the former naval personnel, raising the issue with the government's top brass.

The BRI, launched in 2013, has been a flagship project under Xi’s leadership, aiming to build extensive infrastructure projects in numerous countries. Official reports state that it has generated $240 billion in Chinese investments abroad.

Held in Kazakhstan, the meeting highlighted India's concerns over the lack of direct land access to Central Asia due to Pakistan's restrictions. Doval's remarks underscored the importance of transparent connectivity initiatives that respect the sovereignty of all nations and do not impose debt burdens.
The meeting, attended by Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, focused on regional security concerns, particularly in the context of Afghanistan. Doval condemned terrorism unequivocally, offering fully funded capacity building programs to combat this menace.
He extended an invitation to Central Asian countries to utilise the Chabahar port in Iran, operated by an Indian company, for maritime trade, stressing on the need to address the anomaly of limited land connectivity between India and this resource-rich region.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar took to social media to declare the launch of Operation Ajay, stating, "Launching #OperationAjay to facilitate the return from Israel of our citizens who wish to return."
Special charter flights and other arrangements have been organised to ensure the safe return of Indians, underscoring India's commitment to the safety and well-being of its nationals abroad.
The Indian embassy in Israel has already communicated with the first batch of registered Indian citizens, informing them about the special flight scheduled for Friday.

Gen Chauhan highlighted the imperative for India to shift from its traditional approach of non-alignment to a more proactive stance, positioning India as a "Vishwa-mitra" or a friend to the world. He stressed the importance of viewing strategic autonomy as a tool to exploit opportunities rather than just mitigating threats.
In this strategic calculus, India will have to take into account the emergence of China as a major power. China's assertiveness has become more evident with its rise, and India, particularly considering its major dispute on its northern borders, must play the strategic autonomy card, Gen Chauhan stated.
“This all what I said comes with a little bit of a caveat because of the northern neighbour. In this strategic calculus, India will have to take into account the emergence of China as a major power,” he said.
He outlined India's journey from non-alignment to strategic autonomy, emphasising three key aspects – securing India, promoting self-reliance, and shaping the global environment to India’s advantage.
“If I were to summarise the journey of India from non-alignment to exercising of strategic autonomy, it can be based on what I can say is three S. First is securing India. Next is self-reliance. And lastly, shaping the environment to India’s advantage and benefit,” he said.
Gen Chauhan also drew parallels from India's epic Mahabharata, highlighting the significance of righteousness and sage advice in shifting the balance of power.
“In India’s famous epic Mahabharata, Lord Krishna shifted the balance of power towards the Pandavas. His military might have gone to the Kauravas, but it was only his righteousness and sage-advice which shifted the balance of power,” he said.
Discussing the economic aspects of global geopolitics, Gen Chauhan underlined the potential for economic alignment to shift the global balance of power. He referenced India’s utilisation of platforms like the G20 to leverage soft power and play a dominant role.

This reformation involves reshaping the priorities of international financial institutions such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and multilateral development banks.

This unified support for India's UNSC aspirations reverberated on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit. U.S. President Joe Biden, French President, African Union President, U.K. Prime Minister, and the President of Turkey, all openly endorsed India's demand for a permanent UNSC seat.
U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres also underscored the imperative need for UNSC reforms during the G-20 Summit, emphasising that the current composition of the Security Council reflects a post-World War II era and no longer mirrors today's global realities. He fully acknowledged India's aspirations, highlighting the necessity to adjust the Security Council's composition to align with the contemporary world.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reinforced this sentiment, stating, "A mid-20th century approach cannot serve the world in the 21st century." He emphasised the urgency for international institutions to adapt to changing realities, expand their decision-making forums, reconsider their priorities, and ensure representation of voices that truly matter in the modern world.
The unanimous endorsement from global leaders underscores India's growing global influence and the widespread acknowledgment of its pivotal role in shaping the future of international diplomacy. The resolute call for India's permanent seat in the UNSC reflects a collective recognition of the nation's stature and the need for a more representative and responsive global decision-making body.
<ins>Need for reforms</ins>
Amidst mounting international pressure, the urgent need for reform within the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has gained unprecedented momentum. Several factors, including the rising global influence of nations such as Brazil, India, Japan, and Germany, have spurred this momentum.
Additionally, the current fragmented nature of the UNSC, where the five permanent members often fail to reach consensus on critical global issues – exemplified by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict – underscores the pressing need for change.
Furthermore, the outcry against the glaring lack of representation in the UNSC, particularly from Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean, amplifies the demand for comprehensive reform. Surprisingly, Europe, a relatively small continent, holds two permanent seats, further highlighting the imbalance.
The influential "G-4" countries – Brazil, Germany, Japan, and India – have been at the forefront of advocating for UNSC reform. Meeting on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly on September 21, the G-4 nations issued a stern warning, stating the longer the delay in UNSC reforms, the greater the scrutiny on its effectiveness.
They emphasised that the Security Council's inability to address contemporary global challenges efficiently and promptly underscores the urgent requirement for a comprehensive overhaul. Expressing deep concern over the lack of meaningful progress in the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN), the G-4 nations made a compelling case for the UNSC's transformation to align with the current geopolitical landscape.
<ins>What does the IGN process need?</ins>
The issue of reform within the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has been a topic of international deliberation since the formal launch of the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) in 2009. The IGN was initiated following Decision 62/557, adopted by the U.N. General Assembly on September 15, 2008, focusing on equitable representation and expanding the Security Council's membership.

In a meeting hosted by India, the L-69 countries emphasised the urgent need to include both additional permanent and non-permanent members in the council. This call for reform echoes their 2007-08 initiative, which originally propelled the IGN process. The L-69 members stressed their expectation that the ongoing IGN process must commence negotiations based on a single consolidated text, with concrete outcomes achieved within a fixed timeframe.
The core challenge lies in the absence of a "single consolidated text." Progress within the IGN or any other reform process hinges on presenting a clear document before the U.N. General Assembly. Without this foundational document, discussions remain theoretical. India's External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, emphasised this crucial point, stating that he is yet to witness a concrete, consolidated proposal laid out for discussion.
<ins>India’s push &amp; a rare window of opportunity</ins>
In a recent interaction with students and faculty at the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) on September 17, India's EAM S Jaishankar issued a stern warning to the United Nations (U.N.), asserting that the global organisation risked becoming irrelevant if it failed to reform. He asked What would happen if they do not reform? People will find solutions outside. He added that this is a message the U.N. has to understand. They will become anachronistic, and develop the danger of heading towards not extinction, but a little bit of irrelevance.
India’s audacious stance, combined with its escalating global influence, presents a historic opportunity. One potential milestone could be the reform of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The recent successful conclusion of the G-20 Summit, where India managed to unite divergent factions, demonstrates the nation’s diplomatic finesse. If India could navigate the complexities of the fragmented G-20, there is hope that it could drive significant reforms within the UNSC.
India has strategically positioned itself as the voice of the Global South, garnering support from developing nations worldwide. The inclusion of the 54 African Union countries in the G-20, thanks to India’s efforts, has solidified its standing. Support from nations in West and Central Asia has been encouraging, although India remains vigilant about China’s influence in the region. ASEAN nations and numerous Latin American countries strongly endorse India’s bid for permanent UNSC membership. Moreover, India enjoys robust support from the United States and various European nations, creating a rare window of opportunity for New Delhi to secure agreements from both the Global North and South.
However, the key challenge lies in translating these endorsements into tangible progress. Despite the widespread support, India must present a unified text document for discussion and voting. Without this crucial step, the true extent of support for India’s bid remains uncertain. Only when countries are faced with a definitive proposal can India ascertain which nations genuinely back its candidacy and which might waver at the critical juncture.
<ins>The China factor</ins>
India’s bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) faces a significant challenge, primarily from China within the P5 nations. Despite this opposition, recent diplomatic victories, such as the successful resolution of conflicts at the G-20 Summit, have bolstered India’s confidence.
China's stance on India's UNSC candidacy remains a key factor. Although historically resistant, China's position might shift if it finds itself isolated in its opposition. The upcoming third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRF) in Beijing, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), will serve as a litmus test for China's global support. With Italy withdrawing from the BRI and growing interest in alternative projects like the IMEC initiative involving the United States, India, Saudi Arabia, and the EU, the dynamics of the BRI conference could change significantly.
UNSC reforms demand approval from two-thirds of the General Assembly members and ratification by a similar majority, including all UNSC permanent members. While challenging, India's adeptness at bridging differences, as evident in the joint G-20 communique, showcases its diplomatic finesse.&nbsp;
India’s global standing as the world's fifth-largest economy, soon to be the third-largest, with the largest population, a vibrant democracy, and a robust military, strengthens its position. Prime Minister Modi’s positive rapport with global leaders further enhances India’s political backing.

The first devastating explosion occurred in Balochistan's Mastung district, where a powerful blast tore through a mosque during a gathering to celebrate Eid Miladun Nabi, the birthday of Prophet Muhammad.
At least 52 people lost their lives, and over 50 others were injured in this attack. The explosion, later confirmed as a suicide blast, took place near the Madina Mosque on Al Falah Road when a large crowd had assembled to mark the religious occasion. The assailant, detonating himself beside the Deputy Superintendent of Police's car, left behind a scene of devastation and sorrow.
Balochistan, Pakistan's largest province, has unfortunately become a frequent target for terror groups, including the Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Pakistani Taliban group.
Among the casualties was the brave Deputy Superintendent of Police, Nawaz Gishkori, who had been on duty for the event. The wounded were swiftly transported to medical facilities, but the chaos in hospitals across Mastung made it difficult for medical professionals to perform their duties effectively. Around 20 critically injured patients were transferred to Quetta, the provincial capital, for further treatment, highlighting the severity of the incident.
The TTP promptly denied any involvement in the attack, emphasising that such an assault contradicted its policies. Nevertheless, Balochistan's interim Information Minister, Jan Achakzai, condemned the incident, asserting that the perpetrators aimed to destroy religious tolerance and peace in the region.
In another heart-wrenching incident, just hours later, a suicide blast struck a mosque during Juma prayers in Hangu district, located in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. This attack claimed the lives of at least four people and left 12 others injured. The blast occurred in close proximity to the Doaba police station, where law enforcement forces engaged with terrorists.
During the confrontation, one assailant was killed, while another detonated himself near the mosque, causing its roof to collapse. The remaining terrorists managed to escape the scene, leaving behind a community shattered by tragedy.
Pakistan's leadership responded with outrage to these brutal attacks. Caretaker Chief Minister of Balochistan, Ali Mardan Domki, immediately directed authorities to arrest those responsible and declared three days of mourning throughout the province.
Interim Interior Minister Sarfraz Ahmed Bugti condemned the blasts, emphasising that terrorists had no faith or religion. He reassured the nation that all available resources were being deployed during the ongoing rescue operations, underscoring the government's commitment to providing the necessary support for the injured and their families.

The problem of beggar exports has escalated due to Pakistan's record inflation and the toll it has taken on its citizens, particularly those at the bottom of the economic ladder, who are suffering from soaring food and fuel prices. The Standing Committee of Overseas Pakistanis recently voiced its concerns over this issue.
According to Zeeshan Khanzada, the Secretary of Overseas Pakistanis, a staggering 90% of beggars detained in West Asian nations are from Pakistan, many of whom find themselves in jails in Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Khanzada highlighted that these beggars often enter these countries under the guise of religious pilgrimage using Umrah visas and then engage in begging on the streets.
Furthermore, Khanzada revealed that a significant number of pickpockets arrested within Mecca's Grand Mosque are Pakistani nationals, which adds to the concerns raised by Saudi Arabia.
During a meeting chaired by Senator Manzoor Kakar, Zeeshan Khanzada informed the Standing Committee that approximately 10 million Pakistani citizens live abroad, a substantial portion of whom are involved in begging activities. These individuals often obtain visas for other countries and then turn to begging once they arrive, leading to a problematic situation.
The committee was also briefed on the presence of around 1.6 million Pakistanis in the UAE and 2,00,000 in Qatar, indicating the scale of the issue.
Diplomats from Iraq and Saudi Arabia have expressed their frustration with the overcrowding of their jails by Pakistani beggars, stating that this situation reflects poorly on Pakistan's international standing.
These developments come at a challenging time for Pakistan, which is already grappling with a deteriorating economy. The poverty rate in Pakistan increased to 39.4% during the last fiscal year, with 12.5 million more people falling below the poverty line due to challenging economic conditions, as reported by the World Bank.
The World Bank has urged Pakistan to take immediate measures, including taxation of key sectors like agriculture and real estate, as well as cutting wasteful expenditures, to achieve economic stability through significant fiscal adjustments. This has been estimated at over 7% of the country's economy.

Senator Mahmood-ul-Hasan pointed out that Japan had requested 3,40,000 skilled workers from various nations, but had only deployed around 200 workers from Pakistan. In contrast, India had sent approximately 1.5 million skilled employees to Japan, and Nepal had contributed 91,000. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka also provided a competent workforce to the East Asian nation.
Highlighting Pakistan's substantial workforce, including approximately 5,00,000 engineers, Senator Mahmood-ul-Hasan noted that Nepal, with a population of 30 million, had managed to send workers to Japan who were actively learning the Japanese language. This raised questions about the need for Pakistan to better prepare its workforce for international opportunities.
Despite about 3 million Pakistanis working in Saudi Arabia, the government was urged to develop a comprehensive plan for skilled workers, as Saudi Arabia was now seeking proficient employees rather than unskilled labour.
Saudi Arabia has even taken the step of establishing skill centres in Pakistan due to the lack of adequately skilled personnel. Additionally, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is offering to send 50,000 skilled workers to Pakistan.
Representatives from the Overseas Pakistanis briefed the committee about a 2019 contract between Pakistan and Japan, in which Japan had committed to providing language training to Pakistani workers.
Senator Sherry Rehman emphasised the need for Pakistanis to enhance their skills and pointed to Nepal as an example. Nepal had been sending mountain shepherds to Pakistan, filling a gap in expertise in surveying and mountaineering. She expressed concerns about the absence of comprehensive training programs and questioned the competency level of Pakistani workers.
The meeting primarily focused on Pakistan's emigration concerns, including the need to send skilled labour abroad and address various issues faced by Pakistanis living abroad.

India strongly rejected these allegations, describing them as "absurd" and "motivated," leading to a diplomatic tit-for-tat that included the expulsion of diplomats, and the suspension of visa issuance to Canadian citizens.
However, Major General Scott downplayed the impact of this diplomatic rift on defence ties, highlighting the strong cooperation and communication between the armies of both countries. He praised India's role in promoting a free, open, inclusive, and rules-based Indo-Pacific.

Bagchi characterised the Chinese actions as a "premeditated" targeting of athletes, in violation of both the spirit of the Asian Games and the rules that prohibit discrimination against competitors from member states.
Three female wushu players from Arunachal Pradesh were unable to travel to Hangzhou as they were not granted the necessary accreditation by Chinese authorities. Bagchi disclosed that a "strong protest" had been filed in both New Delhi and Beijing against China's "deliberate and selective obstruction" of Indian athletes.
China's actions come at a time when the two countries are grappling with an ongoing border dispute in eastern Ladakh. Bagchi stated, "The government of India has learned that the Chinese authorities have, in a targeted and premeditated manner, discriminated against some of the Indian sportspersons from the state of Arunachal Pradesh by denying them accreditation and entry to the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China."
He reaffirmed India's firm rejection of the differential treatment of its citizens based on domicile or ethnicity, emphasising that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral and inalienable part of India. Bagchi warned that India reserves the right to take "suitable measures to safeguard our interests."
China's actions not only contravene the spirit of the Asian Games, but also violate the rules governing their conduct, which explicitly prohibit discrimination against competitors from member states, according to Bagchi. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning responded to the situation by stating that the Chinese government has never "recognised" Arunachal Pradesh. He noted that the Hangzhou Asian Games is a prestigious multi-sport event and emphasised China's welcome to athletes from all countries, using legally recognised identification.
China has consistently laid claim to Arunachal Pradesh, asserting it as part of Southern Tibet. In an official statement, the electoral body disclosed that it had reviewed the progress on the delimitation of constituencies, with the initial list for constituency delimitation set to be published on September 27. The statement outlined that political parties would have the opportunity to file objections, which the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) would subsequently address along with any suggestions.
Following the deliberation of objections and suggestions concerning the constituency list, the final version would be released on November 30, to be followed by the announcement of the election schedule. According to the ECP, once the delimitation process concludes, it will unveil a 54-day election program, culminating in the general elections during the last week of January 2024.
The dissolution of the National Assembly occurred on August 9, and constitutionally, elections must be held within 90 days. However, the ECP delayed the process due to the mandatory delimitation exercise necessitated by the recently conducted national census.
The census results, endorsed by the previous government shortly before the end of its term, obligated the ECP to establish new electoral districts based on the latest population data. This development raised concerns that the elections, originally scheduled within 90 days, could be postponed until the following year, as the delimitation process was anticipated to require approximately four months to complete.
Amid mounting pressure from various political parties advocating for timely elections, the ECP decided to expedite the delimitation timeframe. The constitution also stipulates that the ECP should conclude the delimitation process within 120 days.
Currently, a caretaker government is in place, which will continue to govern the country until a new Prime Minister is elected through the forthcoming elections. Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar affirmed the interim government's commitment to upholding Pakistan's democratic process by ensuring general elections are held without delay.
Earlier this month, President Arif Alvi unilaterally proposed November 6 as the election date in a letter to the ECP chief. However, the election body refrained from commenting on his suggestion.

On September 18th, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made allegations against the Indian Government, suggesting the latter’s involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent figure associated with the Khalistani movement. Nijjar, identified as the chief of the Khalistan Tiger Force, met his demise in June of this year on Canadian soil. Trudeau, along with Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly, referred to Nijjar as a "Canadian citizen" in their respective statements.
“Over the past number of weeks, Canadian security agencies have been actively pursuing credible allegations of a potential link between the agents of the Govt of India and killing of a Canadian citizen, Hardeep Singh Nijjar,” Justin Trudeau told the House of Commons on Monday.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a known terrorist wanted by the Indian government, met a tragic end when he was fatally shot in Surrey on June 18th. The assailants responsible for the attack remain unidentified. Nijjar, aged 46, originally hailed from the village of Bhar Singhpura in Jalandhar, Punjab.
<ins>Nijjar’s immigration request was dismissed as unreliable</ins>
However, there are doubts about Nijjar's Canadian citizenship status. According to reports, Nijjar entered Canada in 1997 using a false identity. He arrived at Pearson Airport in 1997 using a fraudulent passport under the name "Ravi Sharma."
According to a Global News report, Nijjar claimed that his troubles began in 1990 during a police crackdown on insurgents in the Indian state of Punjab. During this crackdown, his brother and father were arrested by the Punjab Police. Initially, his brother Jatinder was detained by the police, and later, his father was also arrested. Nijjar asserted that both of them were subjected to torture.
In an affidavit submitted to immigration officials, Nijjar stated that he himself was apprehended by the Punjab Police in 1995, and subjected to torture in an attempt to extract information about the whereabouts of his brother and father.
Nijjar further claimed that he bribed the police with Rs 50,000 and altered his appearance by cutting his hair. Until 1996, he remained out of the public eye, staying at a relative's house in Uttar Pradesh. When the police reached the relative's house, Nijjar was not present, and his uncle was arrested.
In the affidavit submitted to immigration officials in June 1998, Nijjar asserted that his life was in grave danger in India. However, immigration officials did not believe his claims and stated that the letter submitted by Nijjar was fabricated.
They pointed out that the information provided by a physician who claimed to have treated Nijjar after his release from police custody contained spelling mistakes, which raised suspicions. As a result, his immigration request was dismissed as unreliable. The panel handling his case explicitly stated that they did not believe Nijjar was ever arrested and tortured by the police.
In its report, Global News highlighted, "The misspelling of a body part, along with an account that refugee officials found implausible, led them to dismiss him as unreliable and untrustworthy."
<ins>Plan B - Marriage of convenience</ins>
Following the rejection of his asylum application, Nijjar pursued an alternative path, often referred to as Plan B, in his quest for Canadian citizenship. Just eleven days after immigration officials denied his asylum claims, Nijjar entered into a marriage with a woman from British Columbia who then sponsored him to immigrate as her spouse. In his application, he explicitly disassociated himself from any groups advocating "armed struggle or violence to reach political, religious, or social objectives."
Despite his efforts, Nijjar's application faced another setback when officials dismissed it as a "marriage of convenience." This was due to the fact that the woman who sponsored him had been previously sponsored by a different husband when she arrived in Canada in 1997. Nijjar chose to challenge this decision in court but, unfortunately, his appeal was unsuccessful, with the court ruling against him in 2001.
In an attempt to substantiate the authenticity of his marriage to the British Columbian woman, Nijjar submitted various pieces of evidence, including a wedding invitation, photographs, and an image depicting them cuddling in a chair.
However, Canadian immigration officials remained unconvinced that the marriage was genuine. During their investigation, it was revealed that the woman had sponsored another man for immigration to Canada just one year before marrying Nijjar. Consequently, the Canadian immigration authorities rejected Nijjar's application, again labelling it as a "marriage of convenience."
Although Nijjar continued to identify himself as a Canadian citizen, it remains unclear whether he ever obtained Canadian citizenship and, if so, when that might have occurred.

The U.S. signed an agreement with Palau last week, allowing American ships to enforce maritime regulations in Palau's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) without a Palauan officer present. Such developments, including actions by China and the involvement of nations like Australia and Japan, have left ASEAN member states contemplating their roles in a region increasingly dominated by great power competition.
The presence of Vice President Kamala Harris instead of President Joe Biden at the ASEAN Summit has raised questions about the U.S. commitment to the regional bloc's role in its Indo-Pacific strategy. As tensions escalate, the urgent question is where ASEAN sees itself in this evolving landscape and what steps it must take to ensure its continued relevance and viability as a regional organisation.
ASEAN, with its principle of non-interference by external parties and non-interference in the internal affairs of member states, is facing challenges to its core principles due to actions by the U.S. and China and developments in Myanmar, the Philippines, and the South China Sea. ASEAN's need for consensus among its ten member states has hindered a coordinated response to mounting regional challenges. As external powers engage in mutual recriminations, ASEAN appears divided and passive, struggling to find a unified voice.
The failure to establish a South China Sea Code of Conduct that protects member states' interests highlights the underlying issue of ASEAN's lack of unity in defending their EEZs. As external powers increasingly engage with the region, ASEAN's disunity threatens its ability to play a meaningful role in the geopolitical landscape.
The expanding involvement of additional powers, including India, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and European nations, adds complexity to the region. India, for example, has reversed its stance on the South China Sea and supports international rulings rejecting Chinese claims. India is also increasing its security engagement with ASEAN member states.
ASEAN's geographical position in the Indo-Pacific is strategically significant, but it must develop decision-making mechanisms to effectively address contemporary challenges. The organisation's passivity and division over issues like Myanmar and the South China Sea weaken its position. ASEAN's strength lies in unity, and it must unify to defend its members' interests.
As ASEAN faces an evolving Indo-Pacific, it must redefine its role with Dialogue Partners. The diversification of actors in the region offers ASEAN an opportunity to assert its political position in the same way it is positioned geographically. A unified and proactive ASEAN can serve as a neutral ground for mediating Indo-Pacific conflicts and promoting regional peace and security.
There are no easy solutions to ASEAN's current crisis, but the ongoing changes in the Indo-Pacific theatre provide an opportunity for the organisation to reassess its principles for peace and security. ASEAN's unity is its most promising tool to achieve its long-term goals. A strong, independent, and unified ASEAN can play a vital role in mediating conflicts and ensuring regional stability. This role will require ASEAN to move beyond its current "centrality" and create a new role for itself in the evolving Indo-Pacific.

The statement was made in response to a query from PTI regarding China's reaction to the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, which was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G20 summit. This corridor involves India, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, the European Union, France, Italy, Germany, and the US.
Prime Minister Modi described the corridor as an "important and historic partnership" that would foster economic integration between India, West Asia, and Europe, providing a fresh impetus to global connectivity and sustainable development. US President Joe Biden also praised the pact, particularly its focus on clean energy and improved communities.
Analysts have noted that the new corridor represents one of the first global connectivity projects to rival China's BRI, which has faced scrutiny over debt sustainability, particularly among smaller nations.
China's Belt and Road Initiative, launched in 2013 by Chinese President Xi Jinping, envisions connecting China to Southeast Asia, Central Asia, the Gulf region, Africa, and Europe through an extensive network of land and sea routes, essentially reviving the ancient Silk Road trade route.
However, with the BRI having accumulated billions of dollars in investment over the past decade, Italy's decision to exit the initiative has posed a significant challenge to China. Italy's Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, cited unmet expectations and opposition from Italian political parties as reasons for the withdrawal. This development comes as China plans to hold the third conference of the BRI in Beijing next month.
Italy's potential departure from the BRI could be seen as a setback for President Xi Jinping's ambitious project. The issue reportedly featured in discussions between Chinese Premier Li Qiang and his Italian counterpart, Giorgia Meloni, during the G20 summit in New Delhi.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, during a media briefing in Beijing, acknowledged that the leaders exchanged views on various bilateral issues and expressed mutual commitment to enhance dialogue and cooperation for prosperity and development. Regarding the BRI, she highlighted the significant participation of over 150 countries and cooperation partners over the past decade, with tangible benefits for participating nations. Mao Ning emphasized that further harnessing the initiative's cooperation potential serves the interests of all partner countries.
While not directly addressing Italy's withdrawal from the BRI, Mao Ning underscored the deep historical connections between China and Italy, both situated at opposite ends of the ancient Silk Road. She expressed optimism about expanding practical cooperation across various fields to further strengthen their comprehensive strategic partnership.

See politics is a game of perception. One action leads multiple reactions and results. Let me explain. The India-Canada row made Khalistan talks more relevant in India. Old videos and connections started coming out on social media for the whole world to see. This led to citizens of India disliking Khalistan even more. Also, some political connections came to light.

<li>A video went viral which showed a CNN report claiming ISI links with Nijjar. People started about talking the nexus between ISI and Khalistan.</li>
<li>Former R&amp;AW official, in an interview, told that Congress leader Kamal Nath used to send money to Bhindranwale. In short, Bhindrawale was an asset to Kamal Nath and Congress. This established a connection between Congress and Khalistan.</li>
<li>Perception made - Canada &amp; Khalistan + ISI &amp; Khalistan + Congress &amp; Khalistan = Nexus of Khalistan, ISI, Congress, and Canada. Implication - Advantage BJP.</li>

Now I come to the title of this discussion. It was a grave mistake committed by Trudeau to name India in Nijjar's killing, especially if you consider that Trudeau and PM Modi had a conversation about this issue. The point is when they talked about this sensitive issue in private, why did Trudeau went public in accusing India.

Honestly, I believe that this was the slip-up GoI had been waiting to happen. I think the sub-par welcome of Trudeau in the G20 was also planned. PM Modi might have expected something of this sort to happen.

And when it happened, we were ready to pounce.

Now, New Delhi has the license in dealing with these separatists and terrorists in any manner they want.

The seeds of this conflict were sown during the time of farmer's laws protest when Khalistan, backed by Canada and opposition, had an agenda.
However, had the GoI taken any 'hard steps' then, it would have been branded as a Minority Killer. But now, they have a full support, both domestically and internationally, to go after these anti-India forces.

<ins>Voice of the Global South</ins> - In a world where there is a trust deficit, most of the nations wants India as a friend bcz a friend in need is a friend indeed.

The Five Eyes is an intelligence alliance composed of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. These partner countries share a broad range of intelligence with one another in one of the world's most unified multilateral arrangements.

“We are deeply concerned about the allegations referenced by Prime Minister Trudeau. We remain in regular contact with our Canadian partners. It is critical that Canada’s investigation proceed and the perpetrators be brought to justice,” said White House National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said in a brief statement.

A spokesperson for Australia’s foreign minister Penny Wong said Canberra’s concerns had been conveyed to New Delhi at “senior levels”. “Australia is deeply concerned by these allegations and notes ongoing investigations into this matter,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

Trudeau's allegations row: The 'Five Eyes' has been activated, it seems

This is the <a href="https://policharcha.com/discussion/internationalrelations/55f19f95-deb1-410b-9bd9-90d1aedaa24e/big-revelationa" target="_blank">last discussion</a> I posted about Trudeau alleging Indian links in the murder of banned KTF chief Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

So over the last few years there have been an increase of anti-India activties in Canada by Khalistani elements. There were instances of protests outside Indian Embassy, assault on Indian-origin journalists, parade organised to celebrate assassination of former PM Indira Gandhi, and threat posters for Indian diplomats.

And India has been asking Canadian Govt to do something about it, but there was close to none response from the latter.
All we got from Trudeau was a statement saying, "Canada will always defend freedom of expression... conscience and peaceful protest..."
"It is important to remember that the actions of a few do not represent the entire community or Canada," he added.

It reached to a point that PM Modi had to convey his concern to Trudeau on the sidelines of the recently concluded G20 Summit. In a strong worded message PM Modi said that extremist elements in Canada are "promoting secessionism and inciting violence against Indian diplomats, damaging diplomatic premises and threatening the Indian community and their places of worship. The nexus of such forces with organised crime, drug syndicates and human trafficking should be a concern for Canada as well."

The point is India used G20 as a platform to talk about its concerns to Canada. Moreover, Trudeau did not receive a very warm welcome from PM Modi like the other leaders did. Canadian media and opposition even shared videos claiming how Trudeau was snubbed in G20 and humiliated in front of the world to see. He was mocked back home.&nbsp;
And then came something which no one expected, Trudeau's plane had encountered a problem and he was stuck for more than 36 hours in a place where he was not even welcomed properly for. This added to the humiliation.

Therefore, I think such a knee-jerk reaction was expected out of Trudeau. Accusing another democratic republic in your Parliament to take out attacks in your home country against questionable citizens WITHOUT ANY PROOF.
All he could say that some credible sources gave him the intel. Canada even expelled an Indian diplomat over it.

The Indian Govt, however, has rejected all of Canada’s allegations. In a swift response, the Ministry of External Affairs has stated that any allegation of India’s involvement in Nijjar’s killing is ‘absurd and motivated’. Moreover, in a tit-for-tat, Indian Govt has also asked a Canadian diplomat to leave in 5 days.

Trudeau is facing backlash not only in his own country, but also in the multilateral forums. With his popularity sharply decreasing, one can expect these hopeless tactics to shift the focus/blame to someone/something else as Canada goes into federal election mode in 2 years time.

Also, the point of the matter is, now Canada is speaking the same language we used to speak some time back.&nbsp;

“Any involvement of a foreign government in the killing of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil is an unacceptable violation of our sovereignty,” Trudeau said.
Notice the words "violation of our sovereignty". Kind words (/s) coming from of someone who harbours people from terror outfit like Khalistan, whose main goal is to violate sovereignty.

Trudeau also said Canada had declared its concerns to the Indian government at the G20 Summit, and “I continue to ask with a great deal of firmness that the government of India co-operate with Canada to shed light on this situation.”
Notice how we have been asking Canada to "co-operate" with us. Now the boot is on the other foot.

so a lot drama took place involving the Canadian PM Justin Trudeau in the recently concluded G20 Summit in Delhi.

Firstly, the Canadian PM did not get a warm welcome like the State heads from other countires did. He even faced backlash in his home country due to the same. Secondly, Trudeau got a strong worded message from PM Modi about the extremist activities being done in Canada agaisnt Indians and Hindus in general. Moreover, if all this was not enough, due to technical fault in his plane, he had to stay for an extra 36 hours in a place where he was being felt unwelcomed. The event not only brought shame to him, but also gave him a message about keeping his priorities in check. Every little event in geo-politics carries some significance. Modi sure knows how to and when to give an answer.

in the G20 summit in delhi, modi launched told the world India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor. it is a multination project looking to build road, water and rail network in Asia, Middle east and Europe for easing trade among these countries. it is similar to China's BRI which looks to do the same. As China and India can be considered rivals, the project also acts as geopolitical tool to lessen the influcne of China.
