Man from Hyderabad, allegedly duped into joining Russian Army, killed in Ukraine conflict

A tragic incident has come to light as a 30-year-old man from Hyderabad, reportedly enlisted into the Russian Army through a job scam, lost his life in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, officials revealed on Wednesday.

The family of the deceased, identified as Mohammed Asfan, sought help from AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi to bring him back from Russia. However, their hopes were shattered when Indian Embassy officials in Moscow confirmed Asfan's demise.

Survived by his wife and two children, Asfan fell victim to deceptive agents who recruited him, along with others, as 'helpers' to support the Russian Army during the war.

This unfortunate incident follows closely after another heartbreaking loss, where a 23-year-old Indian, Hamil Mangukiya from Surat, Gujarat, met a similar fate.

Mangukiya, lured into a job opportunity in Russia, was enlisted as an assistant in the Russian Army, only to perish in a Ukrainian airstrike on February 21 in the Donetsk region.

Reports indicate a distressing trend of Indian nationals being coerced into serving as security aides for the Russian military, with some even forced into direct combat with Ukrainian forces along the border.

In response to mounting concerns, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) acknowledged last month that efforts are underway to secure an early release of Indian citizens employed as support staff for the Russian army.

"It is our understanding that there are 20-odd people (Indians) who have gone there to work as support staff or as helpers with the Russian army," said Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal during a press conference.

"We are trying our level best for their early discharge," he further stated.

Jaiswal also highlighted that India is in regular touch with Russian authorities, both in New Delhi and Moscow, to ensure the return of the Indians.
