We are ready to shed blood for the country; CAA, UCC not acceptable, says WB CM Banerjee

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made a firm declaration on Thursday, asserting that her state would not witness the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC), and Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

Addressing a gathering in Kolkata on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, Banerjee emphasized her commitment to national unity while rejecting the contentious policies. "We are ready to shed blood for the country, but will not tolerate torture for the country. A uniform civil code is not acceptable. I want harmony among all religions. Your safety. Your life. No NRC, no CAA," she asserted.

In a direct criticism of the BJP government, Banerjee condemned what she termed as the misuse of central agencies. "If there is a blast, they (BJP) send NIA to arrest everyone. By arresting everyone, your country will become desolate. We want a beautiful sky for which everyone must stay together. If anyone comes to riot, you should keep quiet, keep your head cool," she added.

Banerjee also took the opportunity to extend Eid greetings during her address. "Eid Mubarak. It is the Eid of happiness. It is the Eid of giving strength. It is a big thing to observe this Eid by fasting for a month without drinking water," she remarked.

On social media, a post from Banerjee's official handle wished everyone a joyous Eid-ul-Fitr, hoping for happiness, peace, and prosperity for all.

Simultaneously, several other prominent leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, also conveyed their wishes for Eid-al-Fitr.

Eid-ul-Fitr signifies the culmination of the holy month of Ramzan and marks the beginning of a new Islamic year, Shawwal. The observance of the moon determines the end of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid, leading to variations in its observance across different regions.
