Delhi HC denies relief to Arvind Kejriwal in excise policy case, sets next hearing date

On Wednesday, the Delhi High Court rejected Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's plea for relief concerning his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the excise policy case.

The court granted the ED seven days to respond and scheduled the next hearing for April 3. Kejriwal had approached the Delhi High Court, arguing that the ED's actions infringed upon his fundamental rights.

In his plea, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief asserted that the ED had failed to prove his guilt. Kejriwal's legal team argued, "The DOE has at the time of arrest has failed to establish that Petitioner is guilty of committing activities stipulated under Section 3, i.e., be it one of concealment, possession, acquisition, use of proceeds of crime as much as projecting it as untainted property or claiming it to be so.”

Kejriwal also criticised his arrest without being questioned, implying a premeditated and political motive behind the proceedings.

Earlier on Wednesday, Kejriwal's wife Sunita released a video message, stating that her husband would reveal significant information regarding the alleged excise policy scam in court on March 28 and provide evidence.

During her meeting with Kejriwal in ED custody, Sunita was told that the central agency had conducted over 250 raids related to the "so-called liquor scam" in the last two years but hadn't found "a single paisa" in any of them so far.

Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 by the ED in connection with the Delhi Excise Policy case, which is linked to a money laundering investigation. He was remanded to the ED till March 28. The case involves alleged irregularities and money laundering in framing and implementing the Delhi excise policy in 2022, which was subsequently scrapped.

Former Deputy Chief Minister Sisodia and AAP's Rajya Sabha MP Singh were arrested last year in connection with the Excise Policy case, while former minister Jain was arrested in a separate money laundering case.
