Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi meets S Jaishankar and Ajit Doval in a surprise visit

In a surprise visit to India, Chinese Foriegn Minister Wang Yi met with India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and India’s Foreign Minister S Jaishankar in two separate meetings on Friday.

This is the first visit by a high-profile Chinese official since the clash at Galwan valley, where soldiers from both the country engaged in hand-to-hand combat, leading to casualties from both sides. Since then, the Indian and Chinese forces remain locked in a stand-off at several places along the LAC in Ladakh region.

Among the multifold issues discussed in the meeting with S Jaishankar, the most important ones were about the disengagement of troops in Ladakh, and India’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine war. Both sides agreed on the need for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine. Jaishankar also confronted Yi on his controversial remarks on Kashmir in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

"We met for about 3 hours and addressed a broad substantive agenda in an open and candid manner. We discussed our bilateral relations that have been disturbed as a result of Chinese actions in April 2020," said Jaishankar after his meeting with the Chinese official.

The Chinese delegation also invited NSA Ajit Doval to visit China to take forward the mandate of Special Representatives. NSA Doval responded positively and stated that he can only visit after immediate issues were resolved successfully between both the sides.

The surprise could not come at a more interesting time. Is there anything more than what meets the eye?
